If you’ve ever postponed your dog’s walk, you know it’s no secret that timing is important.
Also, the timing of an idea is very important and sometimes difficult to call. For example, am I ready to retire?
If you have mapped a plan, double-checked your sources, gotten some professional help, and can feel a new free wind blowing in your nostrils, your timing may be right on. On the other hand, if you’re timing your retirement with an uncomfortable work situation, it may be off. We often make decisions based on an uncomfortable situation and run in a different direction where we discover that “everywhere we go, there we are”. Sometimes the discomfort is a sign that we need to re-evaluate the situation and ourselves instead. It may be a signal that we need to grow a little bit more.
You may want to ask yourself these questions:
- Am I resisting something that makes sense in the big picture?
- Am I resisting something because I’ve never done it before or don’t know how to do it?
- Am I running from something or to something?
If you can honestly admit you’re running away from something, you may want to put your foot on the brake. At least long enough to take a break and reevaluate your action plan. Or, are you saying to yourself: “That’s it! This really, really isn’t working anymore and I know I’m better suited for a different game. I want to find out what it is.”
Sometimes pain is the fuel that we need to propel us forward. But sometimes it makes us jump out of the frying pan and into the fire. Which will it be for you?
